Francis Stanton practised as a solicitor from 13th February 1877 in offices on Low Pavement Chesterfield next to the Peacock Inn. Frederic Arthur Walker was articled to Mr Stanton and practised as a solicitor from 1888. They entered into partnership in 1889. Mr Stanton bought two cottages, 10 and 12 Soresby Street which were demolished and he had new offices built in their place. The firm moved into these new offices in about 1905. Frederick Charles Stanton, son of Francis, became a partner in 1922. The partnership continued until December 1928 when Francis Stanton died and Frederick C.Stanton retired, following which Frederic A.Walker continued the business on his own. He retired on 1st April 1940 and Leonard Dawson Borman and Charles Gard, who had both been working for Stanton & Walker for some time, acquired the firm. John Nichol Gill joined the partnership in 1958. Leonard D.Borman retired in 1964 and his son, Alan Borman, became a partner in 1969. David Webster was made a partner in 1972 followed by Stephen Charles Maybury in 1978. Charles Gard died in that same year, 1978. A major extension to the offices was completed in 1980; this on the site of two cottages, 14 and 16 Soresby Street, which were at one time owned by Mr Frederick C.Stanton. John N.Gill retired in April 1995. Helena Karen Downing and George Joseph Thomson were partners with the firm before moving on and David Webster retired in May 2006. |
